BIIG PIIG PINGU

The Irish-born, London-based jazz singer Biig Piig has just released her second EP to date, entitled No Place for Patience, Vol. 3. It explores jazz-funk inspired sounds in 'Roses and Gold', to more minimal indie-pop in 'Pingu'. 'Pingu' is the second track on the EP. It opens with a hypnotic bass line that slides up and down the guitar fret, along with a straightforward, pulsing beat. Biig Piig's vocals are laid-back and graceful as always, but sung with a particular tenderness in lines like: "darling dry your eyes, know she put tears there, but it's pain we share". In the chorus, the vocals are auto-pitched, adding a synthetic tone to her wholesome words. The synth sounds in this tune are otherworldly, buzzing and sweeping to create a rich sonic atmosphere, especially in the outro, where low-pitched, delayed vocals intensify almost to the point of feeding back. 'Pingu' is a minimal and delicate song on this EP, which display Biig Piig's songwriting and vocal talents in such a pure and concise manner. -Ellie Rose-Davies
